Report Editor Control: Does it exist?

Monday, February 13, 2006 6:53 AM

A friend of mine was asking if I knew of any sort of control that would allow users to create their own reports within a VB 6.0 application. I'm thinking the only options out there are Crystal Reports, SQL Reporting Services, Word/Excel using VSTO, or Access...but these are all external...what they really want is something that ...well, basically a slimmed down Crystal Reports designer that can be plugged into an app.

Anyway, anyone ever come accross something like this? I didn't think one existed but thought I'd throw it out there.

There is one that I have used from ActiveReports. I'm not a big fan of this report designer though. It requires you to write code to tie all the different designer components together (i.e. Toolbox to layout). There is no simple drag-and-drop of the designer which in turn means that there is no simple drag-and-drop when using the designer. Overall I'm not a huge fan of the ActiveReports product which, even if I needed to roll out this type of solution, would keep me looking.

Also, SQL RS 2005 was supposed to have a client deployable designer, but I haven't look into it. 2/13/2006 8:22 AM | Igloo Coder

Definately give ActiveReports a try. It includes a full end-user designer control to embed in your applications. It does take some work to customize the UI and behavior to your needs, however, it is extremely powerful and it does include a good sample application to get you started. 2/13/2006 7:17 PM | Issam Elbaytam
