Cryptography in the Database by Kevin Kenan attempts to provide a real-world solution for encrypting data stored in a relational database. In this respect the book does an excellent job. Kenan has clarified his extensive experience in the industry into a solution that is well thought-out and in line with industry best practices.

The section on key management is especially helpful and provides a workable solution for a problem that continues to challenge the field of applied cryptography. What’s more, the book contains all the source code for Kenan’s system. If you need to protect sensitive data against real threats, this book is a must-read.

However, Kenan starts off at a fast pace and never really slows down. If you are new to the field of modern cryptography, you will definitely want to start with a book that is at more of an introductory level. Also, all of the source code is written in Java. Java is a good language for implementing a crypto-system; but, as a .Net developer, I would love to have the source code in C#.

All things considered, Cryptography in the Database is a great resource for anyone who is building a system for protecting sensitive data. Posted on Thursday, January 26, 2006 4:00 PM Reviews | Back to top

I'm a bit confused, I implemented cryptography of all fields in my database is less than 1 hour.

It was a simple matter of adding a transformation during my persistence / revival from presistence process. It is an extremely trivial task if you are using OR mapping.

For key management there are many open source key management systems already available?

Is this done in some other way?

I know that MSDN has a tool out there that will take your Java source code and convert it to C#. I haven't really used it,b ut it may be helpful
