(Warning: This is semi-advanced stuff. It’s not hard, per se, but it involves editing important project files manually, which, if done wrong, can render them useless making it so that your code won’t compile (and may not even load into Visual Studio). So back up everything or (better still) commit it to your source control repository before doing anything so that in case you mess something up, you can easily recover! You have been warned.) I’ve been steadily becoming more familiar with MSBuild over ...

At http://csharperimage.jeremy... there is an interesting discussion on whether to use Prperties or to publicly expose fields. I was really excited when I heard Red Gate wanted a review of their memory profiler done. I have been a fan of Red Gate products for years… being first exposed to their products via reflector a few years ago – as someone who has never done memory profiling before, I was also excited to go a bit deeper into .Net memory management. Why Memory Profiler – Isn’t the point of .Net that it manages the memory for you? Before getting into the nuts and bolts of the profiler, you might ask yourself – why use ...

Today the release candidate of Microsoft’s Silverlight 5 was released to the public. Getting Started First, we are going to need to download the required tools to install the Silverlight 5 RC. After I released the MVVM Light installer, I got a note saying that parts of the installation failed on non-English systems (in that case a German installation of Expression Blend and Visual Studio). Specifically, what failed was the code snippets on Visual Studio, and the project and item templates in Expression Blend. Read the rest of this entry » ...
Introduction By now, most of you have heard that Windows Phone 7 – Mango release will support Local Databases (SQL CE) using Linq to SQL. But what you probably haven’t heard much about is how to extract the .SDF that is created in isolated storage to your local computer and view the contents. I find this extremely important for debugging application and making sure my database is setup exactly like I want it. So, that is what we are going to do today. Getting Started with a sample application: For ...
First I found this blog post – which worked but only after some tinkering. There is a comment there that describes a better (simpler) solution, IMO. Step 1: Create the following macro, which simply toggles (twice) the existing TrackActivityinSolutionExpl... command – this is the same command that happens if you turn on solution explorer tracking in Visual Studio options, except here we’re turning it on and then immediately off: Public Sub SelectCurrentItemInSolution... If you are developing you WCF service for web service deployment under IIS and coding with the Visual Studio web server you are in for a rude awakening when it comes time to deploy your solution. Ok, so that is a little over dramatic, but there are a few steps and precautions you need to know about. Below are the main steps to deploying your application to IIS assuming WCF is already installed and registered. The first step is to create an application pool. Make sure that for your .NET 3.5 WCF service ...
Rich internet applications are growing fast in the business and enterprise application landscape as more and more software managers and corporate decision makers are electing to place rich internet applications (RIA's) into their organizations. But with the many advantages of rich internet applications over the client/server deployments, organizations also find many new aspects they need to master and overcome - one of them is understanding the new security vulnerabilities of the rich web based applications ...
The time has come to unveil the new project for the blog. I know, I know. I can hear the excitement. I try to go everywhere I can to preach the gospel of XNA. As I do, the #1 question I get is, "Have you ever published a game?" Every time, I have to respond with, "I haven't actually published anything. I have some ideas, but I've stuck mostly with research and teaching." Over time, this wears on you. I mean, as the saying goes, those who do, teach. Thus, it's about time I practice what I preach. ...
Let’s define what this should mean and be about. How can I as an IT Pro be able to use TFS for the tasks and activities I normally do. Whether it is controlling a project or creating scripts and such. The vision while it goes into execution with TFS, will include a process with SharePoint somewhere in there too. Scenario #1: Change Control, Change Management or Specific no-code Project Control. As an IT Pro, what do I do? Change Control, Change Management, Project Management. The problem? Yes, we ...
It’s been quite a while since I’ve done a GeeksWithBlogs.net Influencers review. This time, I had the opportunity to check out Red Gate’s SmartAssembly 6.1, which is a integrated collection of tools for modifying and manipulating assemblies. Now that phrase, while accurate, is quite a mouthful. So what all does it actually do? SmartAssembly has the ability to: Do strong name signing; Add automated error reporting; Add feature usage reporting; Merge dependencies (e.g. libraries) into the main assembly ...

If your question is, what is this? or perhaps more around … what does this mean? Let me explain a bit about it. Microsoft has been providing this type of services through partners within a given competency to clients that are looking to deploy and implement Microsoft products like SharePoint, Exchange or the strategy behind Windows and Office deployments. The way it works, well you purchase your products and perhaps those products come with Software Assurance and they have training/service credits. ...

Part of the fun of being a consultant is that the technology you use changes from day to day. Recently it is WCF which, while knowing the concepts of since it came out I haven’t used up until now. The nice thing is that it really isn’t any harder to develop for than a normal ASP.NET web service. A couple of the attributes change and which project type you start with is different, but it is still message based services. Just like the method of a web service needs a Webmethod attribute a method in ...

The origin of the following is now lost in the mists of time but it bears repeating. A big party is being held to honor relational database systems & their impact on the modern society. I’ve written about Visual Studio LightSwitch several times in this blog and in my Redmond Review column, including this month’s piece, “LightSwitch: The Answer to the Right Question.” All throughout, I’ve been pretty clear in my support of the product. A little over two weeks ago LightSwitch shipped, and I think it’s off to a very good start. To help it along, I wrote a series of five whitepapers on LightSwitch for the product team, and they were just published by Microsoft. You can find them all ...
No matter which ORM or data access technology you use, at some point you just need to do some CRUD, and you need to do it fast. In this post, I’m going to show you how to get your CRUD on with the latest version of Entity Framework in no time flat. In fact, I’d be surprised if the code to get your first CRUD operation done takes you more than a few minutes. The one thing the EF team did right with Code-First is make it really easy, but most of the “getting started” videos and documentation is packed ...

For a very (too) long time, the installation procedure for MVVM Light sucked. It involved downloading and unzipping files in various locations. Unfortunately, creating an automated installer is not completely trivial because of the variety of files that are getting installed: Binaries, Code Snippets, Project and Item Templates, all require different locations, and all that for VS2008, VS2010, Blend 4 and Silverlight 3, Silverlight 4, WPF3.5 SP1, WPF4, WP7.0 and now WP7.1 “Mango”. I am a firm believer that, regardless of the framework you use, if the framework is good it provides you all of the things you need. I believe ASP.Net MVC 2 is good and therefore provides me everything I need. This means I don't need to write a significant amount of custom UI code (jQuery, MVC Ajax, etc.) to do things that should be considered "standard". One of these pretty standard things submitting a form via Ajax. MVC provides for this very well with Ajax.BeginForm. The contents of the form are ...
