NuGet (pronounced NewGet), is an open source .Net Package Management Tool compatible with Visual Studio 2010 both Express and Commercial Editions. This simple-yet-powerful tool offers a simple way for incorporating and managing .Net packages in Visual Studio 2010 projects. In leveraging NuGet, we get an intuitive user interface allowing the selection of available packages and an easy way to subsequently manage version upgrades or uninstalls for packages already installed via NuGet. I recently spoke ...
With the ability to extend Visual Studio 2010, lots of great extensions have popped up. These not only increase productivity, but make the whole coding experience much nicer. To find and install extensions, in Visual Studio just go to Tools -> Extension Manager. Here's a list of my favorites: Read more at http://blog.danskingdom.com... ...
I have found myself using more and more of the tools Red Gate software makes. They have proven (to me) to be effective and to the point. This time I am talking about SQL Source Control. Simple to use, simple to add a database to be under Change Control, which really is the goal. Don’t take me wrong, Visual Studio is a great tool, yet it is a developer’s tool. As a DBA or Database Developer (referring to an individual who codes T-SQL) we want to launch SQL Server Management Studio and be able to control ...
As Harry Hill might say, "I like Visual Studio. And I like Eclipse. But which one is better? Only one way to find out…" For a lot of people a lot of the time, the question is irrelevant. If you are doing Java development, you are going to pick Eclipse, and for .NET development you are going to pick Visual Studio. But both IDEs are extensible, and have communities providing extensions for other languages, so if you are using another language it might not be so clear cut. And if you are a language ...
If you have the latest version of the Visual Studio 2010 extension VSCommands you can give your solutions friendly names that display in the window’s title bar. This is nice when you are working in different branches, so that you can differentiate which solution you are actually looking at. I wrote the following regex to put the Branch Name after the Solution name, so for example if you have the client solution open in both Dev and Release, one will be called “Client.sln – Dev” and the other “Client.sln ...

In this post I want to highlight how easy it is starting a MVC Project using NuGet and deploy it to AppHarbor. It is not much but it is fun. First you need to install Visual Studio 2010. Then, go to Tools –> Extension Manager. From the Online Galery install NuGet ( if you don’t already have it ). Make sure you also have ASP.NET MVC3 installed. Create a new MVC 3 Project. Add a Class Library project to the solution. Since you’ve added NuGet you have access to the Package Manager Console. I’m sure ...
Since ArcGIS 10 during the Visual Studio build an additional target with the execution of a program named esriRegasm is called. Amongst other things this program adds the COM-categories in the registry. If you need to call this program outside a build at an own cmd-prompt you could often see some strange errors. Having the right permissions First at all you need administration permissions. This is for the registry-entries. You could open an admin-cmd like: Win + R runas /user:<AdminUser> cmd ...
Many time developer required specific port for development when he/she using Visual Studio for asp.net application development. Some 20 years ago when disk space was say £1 per mega-byte, there some virtue in using tab characters in your code, but now with current prices the cost saving of using tab characters is even more insignificant than it was. So how do we get rid of tab characters. First turn off tab characters in your options and use spaces instead. A quick way to get rid of tab characters is select all of the text, do a control-X and a control-V. Another way in Visual Studio is to select the affect text and then ...
While I was away on a two week holiday in Morocco I notice that the Visual Studio team have dropped a very welcome SP1 refresh that means you can now play with the Async CTP with Visual Studio 2010 SP1. It also means you can program against ASP.NET MVC 3.0 and use the Aysnc CTP at the same time. Visual Studio Blog - SP1 refresh announcement - http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... In TFS2008, deleting a build removes it from the database itself. If you delete a build called Build_20110423.1 or 1.0.0.1 from Build Explorer and trigger the build again then you will see that new builds starts with same number (Build_20110423.1 or 1.0.0.1) but not with an incremental number (Build_20110423.2 or 1.0.0.2). But, it doesn’t work the same way in TFS2010. I queued a build in TFS2010 which got failed with Build Number 1.0.14.0 due to compilation errors. I wanted to reuse the same build ...

URL Routing is a very nice new feature in ASP.NET 4.0. And in Visual Studio everything works just great. But as soon as you start testing on IIS you get a "Error 404.0 - Not Found". To solve this you need to make sure that: you have set the Application Pool to "asp.net 4.0 application pool". Routing will not work with "asp.net 4.0 classic application pool". you add the following code to your web.config: <system.webServer> <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllR... <remove ...
Last week at MIX11, Preview 4 of WCF Web API was released. If you missed it, you can watch the video here. One way to get Preview 4 and start playing with it is to download it here. However, an even easier way to to just grab the bits from NuGet: When you download the latest Web API bits, there are a couple of sample applications that show off the latest features of the Web API (these are in the CodePlex download, not the NuGet packages). The first one is a Contact Manager “Simple” project which ...
UPDATED 6 JAN 14 In last days I Installed MVC 3 update in my PC. Today I got chance to take a look on MVC 3. I create a sample project and see a kind of problem “Nuget is not installed or out of date”. For those people who have trouble like this. Go to tools > Extensions > uninstall the Nuget and installed the Nuget again. Now it will work fine. This problem happen in VWD 2010 Express sp1. For people’s information MVC3 come pre-installed in 2012 and then removed in 2013. Don’t worry MVC 3 project ...
UPDATED 28 December 2013 In this post I am writing how to fix the MySql.Data.MySqlClient issue when server doesn’t make call to same library with same version that is used in development server. Back in 2011 when we use Mysql I prefer simply to use .net connector. At the end of 2013 (december) I doesn’t like to use .net connector anymore. I personally hate it. In my another post I write it clearly Don’t use MySQL .net connector, here is why ? Use nuget in Visual studio is best and easier option which ...

HTML5 introduces markup-level functionality for rich graphics, animation and web multimedia. It also supports a richer web application functionality and extends the client capabilities with local storage. Many pundits see it as the next generation web - web 3.0 if you like - and an open standard replacement for propriety plug-ins, Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash. But, for all its new features, HTML5 is still only the end product. This article looks at HTML5 from the web programmer's point of ...
I haven't posted a recap lately, because the Virtual Brown Bag recordings weren't being uploaded for a while. That was fixed two weeks ago, so I had a lot of meetings to catch up on. Here's an all-you-can-eat brown bag buffet… March 3 Guest presenter Jim Christopher - creator of StudioShell, a deeply integrated PowerShell host available inside of Visual Studio 2010 and 2008. StudioShell exposes many of Visual Studio’s extensibility points in a simple and consistent way, and it makes the Visual Studio ...

At http://studiostyl.es/schemes there is wide selection of colour schemes for Visual Studio. I hestitate to use the word comprehensive, as from what I have been told by an expert on colour schemes for computer applications, the best background is a neutral grey and I have yet to see a colour scheme there I really like.

However you may find just the one for you so give the site a try!

Since my blog is mainly about Silverlight, WPF and Windows Phone 7, I decided that I’d make a recap of today’s MIX 11 Event for those of you who missed it. I only included things that I thought were big enough to mention to not waste any time. Of course, you can check out the keynote yourself by visiting the MIX Site. MIX11 Day 2 – Windows Phone 7 – “Mango” update coming shortly. Microsoft showed a fan-made video that if enough people like it Microsoft will make it a Television commercial. They are ...

Recently I've found that one of our Hotfix Branches was taking a long time to compile (15min or more). This was strange because our main development branch was OK and compiling the same Visual Studio solution in under 3 minutes. The only difference was that in the hotfix branch we still had the project in .NET 2.0. I saw right away that ResGen.exe (Resource Generator) was executing for a long time and consuming 25% CPU (I guess it would use more CPU if it was multi-threaded :)) The problem you face ...
I have been busy refactoring a legacy application where there are numerous blocks of code that are identical. To make the code more readable I wrote a sub function that performed the block of code and then I wanted Visual Studio to parse may file and replace any occurrence of that block of code with a new string. Originally I got stuck as it seemed VS2010 only allowed a single line replace, however after a bit of searching I found out that thankfully it does support multiline replace, it is just ...
A little while back we published the Search Work Items for TFS 2010 extension in the Visual Studio Gallery. Noah Coad recently added Cory and I as Developers on the existing Search Work Items CodePlex project. Over the weekend I uploaded the new source code containing our Visual Studio and TFS 2010 updates. Feel free to check out the source code. You can run the code locally but just be sure you have the Visual Studio 2010 SDK installed and you are pointing at your experimental instance of Visual ...

Recently, while browsing Visual Studio extensions I came across the SharpKit tool. It sparked my curiosity as I'm always looking for ways to improve my jQuery and Javascript in general. Working off the example in my previous post about Updating the Content of a WebGrid async we can generate the same Javascript via the SharpKit project. First, head to theSharpKit site to download and setup your first project (check out the Screencasts). Or search "jQuery" in Visual Studio 2010 extension manager. So ...
Fellow Techies of the world.. Welcome! In this obligatory first post I want to just tell you a little about myself and what I intend to do with this blog. I’ve worked in fits and starts on a tech blog before so I’m happy to be a part of the GeeksWithBlogs community now and make it my new home. Let’s begin at the beginning… Sometime back in 1995 my dad (who has worked with computer pretty much since there have been computers) brought home 2 books. Visual Basic 4 and Visual C++ 4 (For Beginners). I ...

It seems odd that in 2011 there is no such thing as a requirements capture language. Martin Fowler describes this as the yawning crevice of doom in software - http://martinfowler.com/bli... , http://www.infoq.com/news/2... When I am building code it is ludicrous that I need to read a perpetually changing 50 page Word document or Excel spreadsheet, or worse a set of UML diagrams that are totally disconnected from reality. We need a standardized ...
Full Disclaimer: Since I am on the GeeksWithBlog.NET Influencer list, I was issued a free 1-year subscription to DiscountASP.NET TFS2010 remote hosting. With that said, the thoughts/opinions located below are my own. I’ve always like Team Foundation Server. The main thing that I’ve hated about it was installing/maintaining it. I’d rather spend that time learning more about things such as Silverlight/WPF/WP7. I really didn’t know what to expect as we use another source control at work and I’ve never ...
As I mentioned in a previous blog post, I’ll be speaking on IntelliTrace at Tech Ed 2001 – North America. This blog post is the first in a series that I’ll publish as I delve into IntelliTrace in more detail, in preparation for my talk. IntelliTrace is enabled by default in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but it is configured so as to only capture some basic information, so as to not impact application performance. I thought a good starting point would be to look and see what the different configuration ...

If you have a lot of TFS build definitions for your projects, its been a bit of a hassle that there is no way to organize and manage them in Team Explorer other than a long flat list. Well, the good folks at Inmeta have released the Inmeta Build Explorer tool which displays build definitions in a hierarchy where names use a . notation to delineate the hierarchy. Since most folks have been implementing a naming standard for builds which at least organize build definitions for ordering, this doesn’t ...
