At the DreamForce 2010 event in San Francisco Force.com unveiled their next big thing in the Fat SaaS portfolio "Database.com". I am still wondering how would they would've shelled out for that domain name. Now why would a already established SaaS player foray into a key building block like Database? Potentially allowing enterprises to build apps that do not utilize the Force.com stack! One key reason is being seen as the Fat SaaS player with evey trick in the SaaS space under his belt. You want ...

If you are interested in software development including a heap of great open source frameworks, then get over to the DDD9 web site and vote for some sessions for the next DDD conference. It will take place at Microsoft's UK headquarters in Reading on 29th January 2011. http://developerdeveloperde... I've proposed a session on the new Async CTP announced at PDC, but there's loads more interesting stuff such as Ruby, CQRS and jQuery Mobile, so get your votes in now ...
Had an interesting Twitter convo today about WP7 development. Question was raised on how to use a WP7 device as the deployment target from within VS.NET. Thinking that this would be an *obvious* question, I replied that you need to set the right value in one of the drop lists in the IDE… I did this, hooked up my device, then tried to run my app, just as a final test that it was as easy as I thought it would be. It wasn’t. So first, your phone can’t be locked, so make sure you unlock it. Also, don’t ...

What is the Silverlight Firestarter is all about? It is a one day, global, live streamed and on demand event keynoted by Scott Guthrie. It begins at 9am Pacific time. Yes, that noon for us east coasters here in the U.S. It provides new self-paced labs and walk through videos. It is interactive and you can ask the Silverlight product team questions during the event. To me the really interesting part is going to be the opening keynote by Scott Guthrie. GiveCamp is a weekend-long event where software developers, designers, and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for non-profit organizations. This custom software could be a new website for the nonprofit organization, a small data-collection application to keep track of members, or a application for the Red Cross that automatically emails a blood donor three months after they’ve donated blood to remind them that they are now eligible to donate again. The only limitation ...
Out with friends tonight, they wanted to see my WP7 device. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really show them anything because my phone’s data connectivity disappeared. With my data connection on my cellular settings turned on, and a 3G symbol visible, I couldn’t connect! Seeing that we were at Boston Pizza, and they provide wi-fi, I get the password and try to connect. While I was able to connect to the wi-fi network, there was no place to actually put the pass code in! So no dice for data. I come home, ...
There's an interesting discussion going on over on the Scrum Development list, dealing with technical stories verses user stories. The idea is that "Improve our continuous integration server" may not directly translate to visible functionality for a customer, so how do you handle this in Scrum. It's a conversation that pops up regularly and there are a couple of schools of thought on the subject. I'm not going to get into here. In the midst of this discussion I jokingly (sort of) made a reference ...

Today (well, yesterday now) was Thanksgiving here in the U.S. In addition to doing my traditional family things (making and eating a large, Turkey-centered dinner), I found some time to pop on to the computer. To my dismay I saw that the #WP7 hashtag on Twitter was filled with news of a program/project called “ChevronWP7” (which presumably has no connection to the U.S. petroleum products company, Chevron Corp. – which has a market cap of $166 billion dollars and whose trademark lawyers may well decide ...

[UPDATE Nov 25/2010] So last night I plugged my phone into my pc to charge, which brought up the Zune software. I wanted a few more apps, so I downloaded them from there. Phone synched, and I went to try my apps. I thought “What the hell”, and tried to access an app on the marketplace. This time I didn’t get the “This item is not available from the Marketplace catalogue”, I got some message about an error and a hex value. I tried to access an app again to see if I’d still get the error message and…*POOF*…I ...
Recently I spoke to my daughter's first grade class about what I do for a living. As a software architect, it is hard to explain what I do for a living. Even among "technical" people, this is difficult to explain. How do you explain this to First Graders? I scrambled thinking on my feet trying to come up with an example that I felt First Graders could relate to. A software system is like the playground at recess. The playground is filled with various programs competing for the slides and swings and ...

Please buy XP Tablet edition - Steve Balmer, 2002 Recently there was a story on PC world explaining why tablet computing hasn't been successful with businesses despite the fact that hospitals, the sales industry and delivery services have been begging for tablets forever. Their explaination is that Apple's iPad gave users the freedom to figure out what to do with the tablets rather than force them into certain usage scenarios. Wrong. iPad was successful and tablets were not for one simple reason: ...

This is a book that all J*** developers should read from cover to cover. I look forward to C# and VB.NET versions. There is a tendency in software development to go to extremes. This book helps to correct that tendency. I reccomend it also to all system architects.

I am a firm believer in learning best practices. I enjoy reading and studying SOLID and how to spot violations in the wild. I whole-heartedly concur with Separation of Concerns, Behavior-Driven development, lean software development and a hundred other things that have really cool buzz-wordy names and make me sound really smart. All these things only serve to enhance one binding truth about software development: it a thinking exercise. You can master every GoF pattern, and be the master of every ...
I’ve recently begun working on an embedded C project where the code has got pretty out of hand and I’m tasked with bringing some sanity to the code. It quickly reaffirms my main focus of good software development. Nice simple composable functions. Everything about good design boils down to writing good functions. Refactoring bad C to good C is a bit of a mission. But my first whack at doing it is always “Extract Method” (well, other than removing the million warnings that the C compiler helpfully ...
The first question, is “Why is architect being used as a verb?”. Mirriam-Webster dictionary does not contain a definition of architect as a verb, nor do many other recognized dictionaries. On the other hand, dictionary.com does add an entry for the use of the word as a verb: Architect 4. to plan, organize, or structure as an architect: The house is well architected. This gives us three key words to start with: “plan”, “organize” and “structure”. Unfortunately these terms can apply to work done by ...

When I heard this I thought I just had to pass it on... We had a new client a few months ago that had bought a brand new Dell laptop. He paid top dollar for it but after using it for a day it kept randomly going into standby mode by itself. Initially Dell blamed our software and said it was causing the problem... well it turns out... They did all sorts up updating the bios etc and then all of a sudden the machine stopped going into standby mode by itself. Everything worked fine for two months, then ...
I just got my first WP7 (an LG Quantum) about ten hours ago. Since then I’ve explored it, played games on it, registered it as a dev phone, deployed my project that’s nearest to completion and tested that, taken some pictures, transferred some essential albums to it, downloaded some apps and some trials, and setup my twitter account and several email accounts both standard and custom. Between one thing and another, I never had a chance to use an actual phone until now. So I’ve been running on pure ...
I was lucky enough to attend Visual Studio Live! in Orlando on November 14th-17th. There were so many great speakers and the networking was great. I met a lot of really cool people and we talked about everything .NET (from WP7, Silverlight, C#, ASP.NET WebForms, AJAX, MVC 3.. and so forth). I took a lot of notes during all the sessions and wanted to provide it to those that could not come out. If you follow me on Twitter then you have seen most of these. Most of the authors put slides/source code ...
There's a lot of public backlash concerning the new TSA Airport security measures which include the new rather invasive body scanners and the option of a very intimate pat down should you decline the body scanner. What I want to know is why can’t the people who build the body scanners build them a little smarter? Smart enough so that everyone passing through doesn’t feel like they’ve just walked naked past a group of strangers. Now I don’t pretend to know all about what goes into developing the backscatter ...
The first step in improving your environment and taking steps to become more agile is understanding what is going on in your pipeline. Many shops today have no concept of where all their various changes are, what state they are in, and when they can expect to get stuff out the door. Dev churns out code as fast as they can and then they lob it over the wall to QA. QA is almost always understaffed and can’t keep up with the mass of code that keeps being flung at them from the developers. When you throw ...

The release of the recent update to the Xbox 360’s dashboard has caused quite a commotion among the Xbox LIVE Indie Games (“XBLIG”) community. The primary reasons for this have been a negative response to various changes that have occurred in regards to XBLIG’s look and presence on the Xbox. Unfortunately, what was an “Indie Developers Unhappy With Dashboard Changes” story has been slowly corrupted into a “Microsoft Wants To Kill XBLIG” story. I undoubtedly played a part in that with my post here ...
Recently I have been given a short term assignment to develop a number of reports in Crystal Reports. Upon arriving to the client location I quickly found out that the only tool I will be using to create the reports is basically the Crystal Reports itself. My initial look at the database quickly revealed that the database structure is far from perfect and that it has some confusing table relationships, another hurdle was in the fact that several columns in various tables were user customizable for ...

Many sites have a contact form, instead of posting email addresses. Admittedly, email addresses are convenient for customers because they can use a mailto link that brings up their email client and allow them to start typing, archive the communication, and manage the thread. When I first started C# Station, that’s what I did; posted my email address for everyone. Holy cow, what a mistake. I received so much spam that my inbox was unusable. Fortunately, spam is more manageable these days, but it’s ...
I deal in user experience. At the core, I’m a developer. If you want to label me, I would say that I specialize in front-end development, or the presentation layer. Generally speaking, when I talk about user experience development I get the following assumptions being made: I’m a designer, and ultimately live and die by the words of my master Adobe Photoshop, but dabble a bit in software development I only see user interfaces and usability. Meaning, when it comes to anything outside making UIs look ...
C# Station has gone through multiple updates over the years. I started it on the 4th of July 2000, shortly after the first announcement of the C# programming language, hence the name. You can find analytical information on Alexa and the Wayback Machine shows screen shots of changes over time. Whenever you pop something on the Web without much thought, there can be true ugliness. The journey from plain text links to drop-down menus evolved from necessity because the number of pages grew from 1 to ...
There was a quote in The Social Network last night that struck me. I can’t remember it verbatum, but it sounded like the title of this blog post: Invent your job, don’t look for one. The context of The Social Network movie of course is Harvard students who create a revolution in social media and earn crazy money in the process. It’s a similar pattern to another software company from a few decades ago called Microsoft (interestingly, there’s a scene where Bill Gates is doing a presentation at Harvard ...
Every creation myth needs a devil. That’s a line from The Social Network, the movie about how Facebook came to be, shining the spotlight on its CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In this creation myth though, there is no one devil and nobody plays the saviour role. Instead we see a whole lot of grey. This surprised me, as earlier reviews that I had read seemed to suggest this was heavy on the anti-Zuckerberg camp and not so flattering for Mark. But I didn’t find this to be the case. Instead we see, beyond the ...

Manage Your Bills Better For some reason I have a strong desire to be involved in a startup. Ok, I know the reason. It’s a game, with winners, and loser. Like Monopoly, or gambling. And don’t forget my twitter customer sentiment analyser. That one was surprisingly simple to build and a lot of fun, but it could ...
Design patterns are an important part of understanding the best practices of software development. Head First Design Patterns is another great book in the Head First series which takes a more story based teaching approach. As you get past the format of the book there are specific things that I like about the subject matter coverage. Rather than just laying out the name, problem and solution for each of the original patterns, they compare and contrast them. In some cases they even pull in patterns ...
