While I'm on the subject of WP7 applications, let me describe one of my favorites... and it comes on the device when you get it. And that application is OneNote... it's part of the Office Hub, and will do lots of things for you that some of the apps I've seen for sale also do. Read my post to see what I have to say about OneNote on the WP7 and also comments to App Authors ...

Purchase at Amazon I wanted to talk for a minute about the author, Victor Gaudioso. I met Victor on Twitter earlier this year and ever since meeting him, I’ve seen how involved he is in the Silverlight/Blend community. He has always been willing to help or share knowledge of Blend with anyone – including me. I recently read a blog post about someone that went to one of his book signings and did not win anything. Victor found out that this person was disappointed and sent him a free year subscription ...
Over the past few years, I have watched developers go to conferences and be filled with excitement over agile development. We love the thought of the rapid changes and better feedback. We get into the buzzwords like Scrum, and Kanban, and the term Burndown list excites every developer’s inner pyromaniac. Then, we take all that excitement back to our day to day lives and quickly find out that we are not in a position to change the process that is in place. Developers talk to me all the time about ...
In the past few weeks, I have not been the most prolific blogger. In fact, I have been so busy with work and book writing that it feels like the past few months have been a very concentrated whirlwind of activities. However, the good news is that I will get a welcomed respite very soon, and am very excited to resume blogging on a regular basis. And believe me, I have tons of content on Silverlight, Windows Phone 7 development, Expression Blend, integration, developer-designer workflow, MVVM and other ...

So it has been almost two years since I had my letter read out on Dot Net Rocks. Richard & Carl promised to send me a mug – it was the going to be the highlight of the quarter and bragging rights in the office… but… the mug never came… ;-( I tried emailing them to find out if they sent it, but no response. After my second email and a year of waiting I eventually came to grips with the fact that I would continue to be using my plain white mug… Then yesterday I got a note from the Post Office that ...
In today’s world, agility and flexibility are two vital assets that every company must have in order to stay on course. Organizations that can adjust to market trends and rise to meet new challenges are the ones that will come out on top. Having the technology to communicate on an ad-hoc basis and meet in real-time collaboration with co-workers and decision-makers allows for many businesses to do just that. However, many companies are still stuck on old communications technologies that cause for ...
One of the biggest aim of BPOS is to help organization simplify management and increase productivity. So what I’m going to show in this post is how simplified it is to setup your outlook client with the help of Single Sing In Tool. Do take note that you need to have at least .NET Framework 2.0 installed in your machine before you can install this. For a start, you need to download the tools from the home tab of your admin portal. Below is a screen shot of that. To start, double click on the icon. ...
I was lucky enough to be nominated to receive the Windows Phone 7 from a representative at Microsoft. The phone that was given to me was the LG GW910. Please note that this phone is not mine, it’s going back in a couple of weeks. The review of the phone below is my personal opinion. Keep reading to find out if I’m actually going to buy one and to see other screen shots. Back to the phone, the first thing that I did was remove the sim card from my iPhone 3G and drop it into the WP7. It immediately ...

The past few months I’ve been playing architect and admin, rather than developer. I have worked with a couple 2010 environments for play and work and at least one upgrade. So here are just a few tidbits that you might not know that I’ve found… When working with the blank site definition you have to activate the taxonomy features through stsadm if you want to use managed metadata. Here is a good article: http://neoassyrian.blogspot... There is a bug ...
I am back to my developer roots…. . After 10+ years working for Microsoft, I have decided to shake things up a bit. Don’t get wrong, MSFT is a great place to work. And I loved my various roles, especially the Developer Evangelist gig. Talking about cool dev. technology with fun people is a great way to make a living. But for the last couple of years I had strayed from my passion. Which is as a developer. I learned a lot, stayed with my hands in the tools, but I knew I wanted to get back. Then the ...
For those who haven’t come across it, PowerPivot is Microsoft’s Excel- and SharePoint-based self-service BI tool. Essentially, it allows power users to build their own SQL Server Analysis Services cubes, except that they don’t need to be familiar with cube concepts and they won’t even notice that SSAS is involved. The other exception from the Microsoft BI norm is that these cubes use a new columnar, in-memory storage engine, called VertiPaq, rather than Analysis Services’ traditional MOLAP (Multidimensional ...
Windows Live has had many lives. It started as a single page at www.live.com, where you could set up various widgets in a tiled configuration. The widgets mostly consumed RSS feeds and the idea was that you could have a home page where the content updated dynamically; i.e. where the content was “live.” I remember when the service was still in Beta and called Start.com; Robert Scoble, then a Microsoft employee, was hawking it pretty hard. It was kind of cool for its time, but it petered out, as did ...
I love what I do, but sometimes I need a break from software, from the office and from sitting at a computer all day. At such times I like to experience the outdoors and hiking is a great way to do that. The Cooloola Great Walk is a 5 day, 102 km hiking track from Noosa to Rainbow Beach [pdf]. In Queensland it is too hot for long distance walking most of the year so I wanted to complete the walk in winter. On such short notice I could not organise a hiking partner, so I did the walk by myself. It ...
Thanks to everyone who attended the “Flip on LightSwitch!” at the Kansas City Office Geeks User Group last night! Lots of great questions and interaction from the group! As promised, here are the resources we talked about: First, you need a place to play with LightSwitch. As it is beta, a vpc is always a good idea. Currently there are three flavors of the Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate VPC: Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2010 and Team Foundation Server® 2010 RTM virtual machine for Microsoft® Virtual PC ...
My own very recent personal experience mirrors this blog post: Silicon Valley’s Dark Secret: It’s All About Age So what do I do to deal with that? Looking at Vivek’s advice, item number 1 is to move into management … yikes… I firmly believe that if someone thought I had the chops to be a manager it would have happened 20 years ago… nobody wants to make me a boss, trust me :) besides which, I like coding! Item 2 sucks… and goes totally against the American Dream of continually moving up… expect to ...
After my last post, I discovered a side effect of registering the BizTalk Assembly Viewer. The Assembly Viewer is seen, essentially, as a system drive, but one that opens VERY slowly. The side effect is that when you're in Microsoft Office (and possibly other apps) and try to Save As..., the file dialog hangs. I'm not sure if it will eventually respond, but I got tired of waiting and simply unregistered the Assembly Viewer. To unregister: 1. Open up a Visual Studio Command Prompt 2. Navigate to <BizTalk ...
I decided to install the new beta of Windows Live Essentials, mostly for the new Sync app. I also got Live Writer, which has the newer Office style ribbon User Interface. (Here’s the Windows Live blog announcing the beta in June. There was a beta refresh last week.) I’ve been using sync apps for a while now, starting as far back as 2004 (IIRC) with Folder Sync (a company/app which was later purchased by Microsoft). When Live Mesh appeared, I switched to it, primarily so I could not only sync to other ...

Silverlight Windows Phone 7 Windows Embedded (in a strictly hobbyist, build your own pet dog, approach) MEF Rx (Reactive Extensions) Parallel Programming Web Design (my skills are way out of date, like the HTML 5 spec!) Well... I should have known better than to try to interview for a new job, but it was a Windows Phone gig... and could have been a career-extender. Not to even think about the crap that's going on at work right now, this would be a sweet deal. But... I don't interview well. I've proved that to myself and others multiple times. I work on .NET 2.0 web database software connected to Oracle, Oracle Stored Procs, and Microsoft Access 8 or 9 hours a day. The stuff's not tricky by any means, it's mostly ...

In the past few months I've had the great opportunity to learn both the iPhone and Android platforms for an App we built for my 9 to 5 job. This was a great new chance to learn brand new languages and frameworks after 8 years of living in the Microsoft world. I'll get to more of the specifics in later posts. In order to validate some of our platform decisions and the choice to move toward mobile development I did some research and came across some amazing stats. According to CITA (the wireless trade ...
I recently passed both of the Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration exams (70-667 & 70-668) and I’ve been asked what I used to study for them. First, here are some free resources that I used: http://sharepoint.microsoft... http://technet.microsoft.co... http://channel9.msdn.com/le... ...
One of my colleagues pointed me at Howard Baines as a recent example of a web consultancy already using Visual Studio 2010 and Entity Framework 4.0 to build web applications. I managed to grab a little time with co-founder Clive Howard (on twitter) to talk through some of the decisions, especially as I was intrigued to learn that they started out on Open Source Software including Ruby on Rails before switching to the .NET Framework. We discuss: Why switch to the .NET Framework? Entity Framework 4.0 ...
I have decided to try and put together a top notch online conference delivered predominantly via UK based speakers, inspired by the very enjoyable and useful community driven MVC Conference http://mvcconf.com/ (see my write up) What I need now is top notch session proposals from folks who know what they are talking about and ideally are UK based. Which means – you! Possibly :-) The plan is: The conference will take place 10am to 5pm UK time, delivered using Live Meeting and recorded for on-demand ...
I am working on a project testing some cool features and stuff that have to be done on a Mac. While I have been back and forth with MacBook Pros, this time I decided I should expand and extent my testing to the stuff that I do on a daily basis. Blogging is a challenge, tools available are not really all that flexible or feature rich. I have MarsEdit and Blogo. I do think Windows Live Writer is the best thing since ... sliced bread, seriously, I love that tool! But in order for this to work I had ...
I believe that every developer that works for someone has at least thought of becoming an Independent Developer at some point in his/her career. If I had to sum up the reason why, I’d pick these: 1. The freedom to pick the projects that you work on. 2. The ability to avoid worthless meetings. 3. Saying goodbye to incompetent co-workers. 4. Being able to do the project the ‘right’ way. (Which is typically your way - hopefully) 5. Getting the full reward for the skills you possess. I’m talking money ...
On Thursday, a scathingly bad review of Windows Phone 7 (WP7) was published by InfoWorld. I had considered writing a post to refute some of its points, but Paul Thurrott did just that, and did it masterfully. There's little value that I can add to his post, other than to link it and suggest that you read it. Meanwhile, Sunday and Monday, much more fair reviews were posted at Cnet, ZDNet, Gizmodo, Engadget and MobileCrunch. All of these reviews were based on actual hands-on experience with a prototype ...

If you review some of my older blog articles, you will notice that we have seen some issues with Outlook 2003 in our mixed Exchange 2003/2010 environment. Since Exchange 2010 supports Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010 and Microsoft Entourage 2008 for MAC, Web Services Edition, there are a few things you can do in advance with the different versions of Office as you prepare for your Exchange 2010 Deployment. Creational design patterns were introduced in order to avoid the inherent tight coupling between the classes which were stemmed up from the excessive creation of objects of one class by the other class. Factory pattern is one of the most widely used creational patterns. This pattern calls for the use of a specialized object solely to create other objects, much like a real-world factory. In the above figure, the client is an object that requires an instance of another object (the product) for some ...
I’m going to toot my own horn here for a bit, highlighting some accomplishments from the last almost-decade I’ve been in the IT industry: Stayed up almost 48 hours straight creating suite of Crystal Reports for a start-up company’s initial product (which launched at the end of that 48 hour period btw). Wrote my own markup language for declaring formatting within an XSL:FO doc that would be translated through a Java app to output a PDF. Introduced initial prototype of web-based application ported ...
My day started out very rough. Hit a few rough patches early on, but then turned around to end as one of the best days of the year! I spent the night in the hospital last night. My wife had surgery yesterday and I stayed with her. No one wants to stay in the hospital, right? Bright and early at 6 AM, I went to the car and discovered a flat tire. I am a software guy. Changing a tire is too much like hardware. I have changed 3 flat tires career total. In the course of changing the tire, I learned a ...

Like the style and theme of Microsoft Expression Blend? Me too! Want to get this look? Here is how: Historically I liked the darker chrome in Windows since Vista. Same in with Windows 7 now: Since Office 2007 – I’ve used the Silver and Black theme. Most people don’t know about this feature hidden in Options menu of the Office 2007+ apps. [In Office 2011 you can get to this option in the Outlook Options, in 2007 use Word] In the last year I got infected with passion for Expression Blend and SketchFlow ...
After we moved user mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, we had several users report issues with Communicator 2007 R2. Issue: There was a problem connecting to Microsoft Office Outlook. The e-mail address used in your default Outlook profile is different from the sign-in address used in Communicator. Change your default Outlook profile to match the sign-in address you are using in Communicator, and then sign out and sign back in to Communicator. Fix: We have a very large Exchange 2003 environment ...
I attended my first CodeStock this year and in short it was awesome. Like 100 billion hot dogs awesome. The travel there was crazy to say the least, but I met lots of new people, had a session go well and recorded 3 podcasts. So that is the short version. If you are on twitter and either follow me or followed the #codestock hash tag, you probably saw my airline craziness in Philly. It all started on Monday. We had a client deliverable on Wednesday morning and due to some things that happened I only ...
