So....this past week has been a bit of a mini-vacation from things. Why? Well, I bought the Orange Box and I got addicted to Team Fortress 2. How addicted? Well over a 4 day period, I logged 24 hours into the game. Yeah, an entire day devoted to play a game. I've cut back a little bit, but every time I have a small window of time, I'm tempted. Very tempted. It's not often that I get sucked into a game like this, especially for the PC. There's only been a few. Unreal Tournament 2004 was my first. ...

In my last post, titled "10 Tools Which I Left After Using VSTS 2008", I have included a list of 10 tools which I am not using currently, as I have the corresponding features available in Visual Studio Team System 2008. However, on the other hand, I am still using few tools even I have VSTS 2008! Here are 10 of among them.. 1. Code Smith: An excellent template based code generator. 2. Crystal FTP: Excellent FTP client tool. 3. Total Validator: One of the most powerful tool that I ever seen, which ...

Microsoft Visual Studio is a really buggy IDE for ASP.NET development and it gets annoying at some point. A co-worker at the office has dubbed it 'Microsoft Buggy Studio'. I've seriously thought about switching to Java development where we have the likes of NetBeans and Borland JBuilder. What keeps me from doing that? Getting a job as a Java developer is a mission impossible in a city where pretty much all software development is based on Microsoft .NET or uses something like Oracle Forms.
Once upon a time there was a little girl called Privacy. Privacy had a rough childhood, having suffered a lot while trying to grow up, and being invaded and broken several times. Her mother, Civil Liberty, tried to create a better environment for her whenever it was possible, but Government, a man hungry for power, was always trying tear little Privacy into pieces. The thing was that Privacy had the keys to several places that Government wanted to go to but Privacy wouldn't open the doors all the ...
Well as far as I am aware, XPe as it stands to day will be available through till sometime in 2010, but it seems more news is getting out about is’s possible Vista based replacement? My personal view is that MS should take a deep hard look at the *LACK* of take up and interest in Vista before heading down this path anytime soon – but that doesn’t mean they won’t try regardless. Now of particular note from the details below from Mary Jo Foley is the indication of the size of the OS? XPe may have a ...

I'm sure a few people want to get their Office 2007 documents into WSS 2.0, especially anyone using TFS 2005.  I found a great article that steps you through the process of helping WSS understand the document types associated with Office 2007:

How to get Companyweb (Windows SharePoint Services v2) to work with Office 2007

IBM are offering $25,000 for 20,000 users to have unlimited remote support for a year, the product itself is free just like OpenOffice which Symphony grew from, that's $1.25 per user. According to Directions, Microsoft Office costs, licence and support, $151per user for 20,000 users, however Microsoft will discount depending on what else is purchased. I don't have to do the sums for you, the difference between the pricing could pay for a migration project which could be tempting for companies looking ...
Anyone a fan of horror games has probably played one of the many Silent Hill games. As an avid fan of the horror survival series, especially the Silent Hill games, I'd seriously recommend finding a version of the Silent Hill Soundtrack (for the original PS game). No matter where I am, I can listen to this soundtrack and it gives me this nervous tension that something isn't right, that something is wrong. It's like a knot deep in the pit of my stomach. I'm getting that listening to it in this office ...
I get people asking me about going independent all the time. Why I did it, what the experience has been like, etc. One of the key reasons that I've gone off on my own is a strong view that many shops are basically slave/master relationships instead of true emplyee/employer relationships. Obviously not *all* shops are like this, but in my career I have somehow been able to hit every rest stop on the IT Interstate that had a malicious trucker or hobo waiting in the bathroom stall. I bring this up because ...

You know that Fibonacci is not a fine wine or type of bread. Your Christmas list is a color-coded spreadsheet with sort capabilities on person, store, and price. The last party you attended was a slide deck check. Your MP3 player contains more .NET podcasts than music. The average shelf life of the books you purchase is 3 months. You have more email addresses than you have digits in your phone number. That's ok, because you have linked them all together with single sign-on from your smart phone. ...
I am at the TechPulse 2008 conference brought to us by MyTechPartners (http://www.mytechpartners.... and Success Computing (http://www.sccnet.com/). The website address for the conference is: http://www.techpulse2008.com/. The conference is located at the Marriott off 394 and 169. New Horizons of MN did not participate as a vendor at this conference this year, ...

I am super tired for some odd reason, probably didn't get enough sleep this weekend. Yesterday was Father's Day and for my dad I bought him some Alaskan King Crab legs and cooked them up with a few small steaks, they were good. I've been thinking about doing some kind of video blog via YouTube possibly about my game demo but development on it isn't going very fast so I think the video would be quite boring. So....tired... Oh and this guy in my office said 'Hi' to me the other morning and I partially ...
I recently had a couple ISV's that wanted to leverage Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) and Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) together to implement their own internal CodePlex (www.codeplex.com). My ISV's wanted to be able to share code between disparate development groups, have discussions, and ultimately drive reuse of valuable solutions to software related problems. CodePlex is great for the community, but it's not targeted at users within an organization. Being that CodePlex is implemented ...
Article Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/m... Introduction I did this article ages ago and have just found where I had misplaced it. Anyway the intention is to provide some introductory information about BAM (Business Activity Monitoring) for those who are relatively new to BizTalk and to help people to decide if it is suitable for their project. I will also provide some links to useful resources I have used before when working with BAM. What is BAM? Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) ...

The ceiling tiles at the place I work are like inlayed so the ceiling has a panel, levels off for the light, and comes back down (like an isosceles trapezoid).  Anywho, my desk is set in just the right spot so I can hear this guy across the office on his phone most of the day.  His voice though, sounds exactly like Seth Rogen (the guy from Knocked Up, with the curly hair).  So all day it's like I'm listening to the tech version of a Judd Apatow movie.

Well, at the recommendation of one of the presenters at the Day of Dot Net in Grand Rapids, I bought up C# In-Depth and started reading... and reading.... and reading. First, a thanks to the presenter who recommended it. It is a pretty nice book on the current state of C#. Second, I love how the author wrote it, going through it bit by bit explaining what should we care and not care about (worry and not worry respectively). Those sort of comments alone made me much more comfortable approaching the ...
Everyone is streaming in trying to find the optimal seat. After four hours of waiting in line, I don’t care where I sit just as long as I am sitting. There are large plasmas all over the place which is good – from my vantage point, Jobs is going to be a dot. Huge applause – Al Gore is here in the audience. From my seat: More cheesy pre-show music … 10:01 AM PST Still waiting, people still streaming in. Whomever was in charge of the herd\logistics should be shot. Microsoft owns them in this regard ...
Updated: 2008-06-10 The first Teched Tweener weekend aka ]InBetween[ was put together by our Developer Evangilist, Joe Healy and the Florida community leaders. The event was two days held on June 7/8, 2008 between the Developer and ITPro weeks of Teched in Orlando. We had nine rooms to utilize and Joe asked a number of people to lead specific tracks which included .NET Code Camp, Day of Silverlight, Agile Camp, RoboCamp, ITPro Camp, SQL University, ToolShed, Office Communications Server University, ...
I recently discovered that after you install the 2008 Team Explorer (here) - and you already had the 2005 Team Explorer installed - you may not able to view or edit TFS work items in Excel. Instead, you get an error that says: "TF80076: The data in the work item is not valid or you do not have permissions to modify the data. Please correct the problem and retry." This error is caused when two different versions of the TFS Office Integration plug-in are installed but not configured properly. More ...
As promised here is the links to the presentation and code samples: http://www.codeplex.com/MOS... TechEd is going good. This years TechEd is a bit different than the many that I have been to before. The keynote was ok - not great, but not bad. I was hoping for some customers to come out on stage and present the really cool things they are doing with Microsoft's technologies. I love seeing front line implementations and the hills they had to climb to get to what they have. But there was none of that this year. They brought out a robot as part of some new Robotics group in Microsoft and they brought ...
I am a lifetime Girl Scout. My mother was a Girl Scout before me. My sisters were both Girl Scouts. Bruce is a lifetime member too. When I was growing up, it was usual for there to be four troops attached to the household at times, one for each of us girls and my mother's troop. That means that Girl Scout Leader magazine in many of its incarnations have passed through my hands at least a time or two. It hasn't always been the highest quality thing. It is a magazine put together by the national office ...
So you have installed SharePoint (WSS or MOSS) and you have been happily using it for a while now. Everyone in the office has been taking part in creating some really cool content or loading their sites up with some very important information. Now fast forward a few months. Your local administrator of the server gets in touch with you to let you know that your SQL Server is running low on memory. What? How could this be? You start to look for the source of the issue and low and behold you run across ...
TechNet interactive campaign lets the geek get the glory Just when you thought your eyes had finally healed from years of straining to make out pixelated adventure game graphics, Server Quest rolls into your browser like an avalanche of early nineties gaming action. This spring, prepare to be ushered into a world where the IT pro reigns supreme. "Don't they already?" you might ask. Maybe so, but this is your chance to prove it. You play as Matt and Alicia, IT geniuses navigating their way through ...
No, really... this one's for real... you watch the Office 2008 Charity Demo and Microsoft coughs up a buck for the charity... Watch the demo Gosh, you'd think the Mac fan-boys would jump on this to try to break Microsoft :) Looks like it's capped at $100,000AU ... so I've done my 35 seconds worth, and we've now all watched it $2790AU worth according to the counter. The entire site is Silverlight, so it's cool to see the UI and how it all works. Check out the links in the lower left... very cool :) ...
While I love Microsoft's developer products, adCenter (Microsoft's search advertising / pay per click) makes me want to hide in shame. See the email I received below. I completely understand the desire of AdCenter to educate the masses, but do you really need a Workshop to get your customers to understand your product? Much less, require them to PAY to attend? Sure you might be giving a 50% credit towards advertising, but why would I pay to attend? That's not the way to get customers to move from ...

So it took a while before i could post my expierence sofar with the TMG. This all due to memory i ordered online and which just arrived 5 weeks later than expected. So well lets start with my review of this new microsoft product. The installation is a bit confusing. When you download the 310 MB file for the TMG and you run it, you will be told that it will install the Forefront Threat Management Gateway in "C:\program files(x86)\Microsoft ISA server" and it will finish with a screen telling you, ...
I'm all about trying new things, because I believe I am ADHD and get very bored at work sometimes. So my boss and one of my fellow colleagues threw at me a couple of requirements for our newest set of sites. We are working on some sites for various offices, which I think will be really cool. Some of the things that they wanted were the ability to see a set of global links and site specific links on the quick launch bar. They wanted something dynamic, so one of the other devs wondered if we could ...
I, together with the majority of the 60 million people living in the UK, watch TV on a regular basis, and I am not here to complain about the declining quality of TV over the years or the general quality of TV ads, as you might think due to the title of this article. I actually think that we do have good TV ads in place today, together with some bad ones as there will always be, and today's TV experience can be pretty selective, with satellite and on demand content, which makes watching good TV a ...

My only disappointment is that we are currently in the middle of moving our current Solutions Centre from one Office location to the other so it'll be some while before I get a chance to test this. It certainly looks quite impressive and it does have some lofty aims, but from a brief look through as well as their well deserved reputation based on Flex Profiles I'm sure this will stand up to it's promises. Test Scenario’s With login VSI you can compare many different scenarios: • VDI vs. SBC • VMware, ...
DESIGN.BLUES As regular readers have no doubt noticed, my overriding interest is design. While it's true that many success stories in the volatile world of IT have been due to luck or good timing, that's not a sustainable model on which to base a line of products or a business. Design discipline, I contend, is the primary difference between continuing success or ultimate failure in the software industry. Most places I've worked design has been a problem of one kind or another. Usually, in small companies, ...

I seen this posted on my favorite programming community </dream.in.code> and just had to post it here on my blog. So, which category do you fall into? I think Im a mix of a few of these: The Ninja, The Paratrooper, and the Vince Neal (minus the partying and hangovers) #1: Gandalf This programmer type looks like a short-list candidate to play Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. He (or even she!) has a beard halfway to his knees, a goofy looking hat, and may wear a cape or a cloak in the winter. ...
Ive been doing a little research recently about the B2B capabilities of BizTalk. Based on the content currently available I thought it might be useful to have a B2B 101 style article with some background information and links to useful resources. so here goes! Background BizTalk is an integration and business process platform which can help you develop different kinds of solutions (BPM, EAI, ESB etc). One of the key scenarios which BizTalk allows you to develop solutions for is B2B. BizTalk can act ...
Ok this is only mildly embarrasing, but I remembered I needed to add 1 person to the database with a blog. When I did so, I thought hmm... how about THIS one? ... so that started a search, and yikes... so far today I've added 25 bloggers to the database. All these names already have entries, but they weren't previously tagged as bloggers. I don't like ALSO tagging posts as blogs because then when you search by the blog tag you find a bunch of stuff by the same person and yes I know I have a few of ...
