This application has some real potential to replace Launchy on my laptop. I will continue to use and let everyone know what I find out. Check it out here: http://www.officelabs.com/p... ...
We're shaking things up a bit over here at NINEQuestions.net. My 32nd cousin (she was born a Williams) and temporary co-host Rachel Appel is turning things around and asking me the questions this time. I'll let her take it from here. When I saw Chris doing the 9 Questions series on his blog, I wondered why everyone else got a little shot at web celeb and not the man himself. So I hopped on IM and said “Hey Chris, you’re interviewing everybody, but where’s your questions and answers? You have to dogfood ...

After my experiences with installing VS 2005 SP1, I decided I wasn't going to get worked up over a long install for this one. So I actually started the install process before I left the office yesterday and then (gasp!) left the laptop there to go home and enjoy the evening. Came in this morning, checked the install log (it went well) rebooted and I now how an updated VS 2008 with less stress :) On looking at the logfile it did take nearly over an hour and a half to install so I'm glad I didn't try ...
Hello everyone, With SQL 2008 shipping late last week it was time to try my hands at this scenario. It worked great but with a few things to remember. Here is the lowdown. There are two way to go about in order to install TFS with SQL 2008 1) Fresh install, 2) Upgrade SQL. 1) Fresh Install I used Windows 2008 because this is going to be the prevalent OS to install on when people are going to start fresh or it most likely will. There was a little issue with that install when Windows 2008 RTM’ed back ...

We're kicking this week off with an interview with my good friend Rod Paddock. Aside from being one of the coolest dudes on earth, Rod's also the editor of a little mag you developer types may have heard of: CoDe Magazine. I shot Rod some questions, and he shot me some answers. Here you go: 1. Where are you from? (especially if its not where you are now, geographically.) I’m from California. I graduated from Palmdale High School in 1987. I lived in Bend Oregon for a few years when I went to school. ...

Two Posts, One Day Yes, I do have a little spare time to blog: so I am going to use it! I recently installed OpenSuse 11 on my machine and I have to say it was a wild ride! Linux has really come a long way in the past year, last year it really wasn't a viable option for me (individually), but now I am so impressed. Install The new OpenSuse 11 installer has an image-based installation system. That is, the guys on the team create generic installations and put them on the DVD. The installer then copies ...

As a ScrumMaster, these are some of my pet peeves, in no particular order: Come late to meetings. Better yet, don't show up to the meeting, don't let anyone know that you're going to miss the meeting, and then get grumpy when the ScrumMaster asks you to not do it again. After all, the team doesn't really need to know what you're doing. Ignore the priority of stories set by the product owner. He loves not knowing what's going to be completed at the end of the iteration. Have side conversations during ...

There are many areas where optimization may occur, and the resulting solution may be different for different areas of concern. In an ASP.NET application, delay may occur in the following places: On the client (within Javascript) Along the network between the client and the web server (lots of information on the page getting submitted, in ViewState or otherwise) On the web server during processing and/or rendering On any other application servers during processing Along the network between the web/app ...
Whenever I run into a weird bug or workaround I like to do a short post about it. Doing so helps the community and it is also self-serving in case I run into it a year or so later after I've long forgot about it. Today is one of those times. My latest disk batch came for my MSDN subscription and I decided to upgrade Expression Blend and Web to version 2. Granted I haven't really used these tools too much, but I plan on doing so in the future. The installation of Blend went without a hitch, but Web ...

The last time I wrote about the Outlook Connector it was to talk about the lack of Calendar synchronization and the fact that a new version of the connector was in internal Microsoft testing. I am happy to announce that the new version is out of internal testing and is available as a public beta. This new version synchronizes with your Windows Live Hotmail or Microsoft Office Live Mail accounts, including e-mail, contacts and calendars. I installed the new version and so far it works great. It remembered ...
I've tried Use Cases and seen them not work. The main reason? They are really heavy handed and developers hate updating them. Customers don't even want to see them. A manager telling me to update the use cases or the functional spec is akin in my mind to someone I don't know telling me to take my medicine. I am one of those annoying developers who is going to ask, "Why am I doing this?" And bad news, if you don't have a good answer, I am going to look at you cross-eyed. Developers in general (especially ...
Only a few hours ago I posted and Outlook macro for creating meetings from an email. I’ve already updated it with some new features (requested by me, of course). The new version is available on my SkyDrive account and has the following new features: You can now create either a meeting or an appointment – there are two macros now. The reminder time has been changed to 10 minutes (bug fix). The original email message is now an attachment, which means the body of the appointment or meeting is blank. ...
I just came across a post by Michael S. Scherotter about his Outlook macro to create an Outlook appointment from an email message. This is a feature that Outlook really should have, and this macro fills that gap very nicely. I cleaned up the code a bit and made some improvements to Michael’s original version: The appointment type is now set to “Meeting” by default so it shows the participants. The Importance and Sensitivity are now set based on the corresponding property in the email. The Busy Status ...
This actually came out a while ago, but if you like the Consolas font that ships with Vista and Office 2007 you can change the Command Prompt (CMD.EXE) settings to allow you to use Consolas. If you don’t have Consolas installed, you can download from the Microsoft Download Center. In order to add Consolas to the list of fonts available for the Command Prompt, you need to run the following command (run this in an elevated command prompt in Vista): reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR... ...
Tomorrow morning I will be presenting an MSDN Webcast titled "Bringing Enterprise Data to Life with SharePoint Server and Windows Communication Foundation." The focus of this Webcast will be utilizing WCF-based application adapters from within Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS). However, these concepts are not isolated to WCF-based adapters; they can be applied to any WCF binding. I will show a great set of demos that explore WCF integration with the Business Data Catalog, custom Web Parts, ...
Overall my family, friends, and I are pleased with my new job. We’ve actually been able to use my travel points to take real vacations (New Orleans, Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando). My wife often reminds me that I hadn’t taken any vacation or sick time since I entered consulting 5 years ago. Things are OK at work. Like most that leave MS, I get frustrated with the manusha of the corporate world. However, my experience over the last year as an Enterprise Architect has been worthwhile. My breadth in all ...
At work they wanted a global document library to upload Resumes that would link to users profiles. For the first part I created a ListViewByQuery User Control, however you can do this in a WebPart incredibly easy. What you want to do is add the ListViewByQuery in markup or create a new object like so: Web User Control: <SharePoint:ListViewByQuery ID="YourID" runat="server" /> private ListViewByQuery YourID; //add this where you would normally add global fields WebPart: protected ovverride void ...
It is a Preliminary guide for developer who is new and interested to work in sharepoint platform from the scratch. Here, I introduced overall idea on how to work in sharepoint platform with some inportant links for developers and aslo for sharepoint administrator. This is my first post in sharepoint development. After getting lot of difficulties i started to work successfully at last with it. So i think my post would be helpfull to understand easily. I tried to summerize my experience in one article. ...
The SharePoint Infrastructure Update was released yesterday. My advice: install SP1 and then install the Infrastructure Update IMMEDIATELY! The updates can be downloaded from the links below: Infrastructure Update for Microsoft Office Servers (KB951297) - x86 Infrastructure Update for Microsoft Office Servers (KB951297) - x64 Infrastructure Update for Windows SharePoint Services ...
Although I was more-or-less lambasted for my post about free vs. open source software, I want to follow-up with a comment or two about .NET development. There is a common misconception that developing for Windows using .NET is an expensive endeavor. For the record, .NET development is free. .NET Framework SDK The .NET framework itself (a.k.a. runtime) is completely free. In fact, if you don't have it, go and download it right now. Check out "Get the Framework" on the right. http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... ...

I ran into an issue today where I needed to change the password on an account so that my application changes would take place. I quickly found out that I could not lock the computer using the standard start tools. I knew this but forgot in my rush to get the change in at 9:00 PM. So I was not in the office physically on my machine and could not get the Service Desk to change the password for me. I them tried command line tricks to lock the computer. No luck! It did not give me the option to change ...

In the Agile thought-space, Big Up Front Design (BFUD) is a four letter word. There is a reason for this. Many times people who envision projects (usually the guy with the biggest wallet unfortunately) don't realize that they don't know everything. More to the point, they don't know how little they actually know about the end user. So they envision the initial requirements for the system, and they boil them down into finer and finer grained detail, until they have something that is implementable. ...
One of our developers at Phenomblue posted a cool little Adobe Air app to use as a real time play list for WOXY.com. WOXY is an independent Internet radio station playing all the latest and classic Indie rock. It's by far my favorite radio station and we actually stream it through our office all day over the PA system. Anyway, check out the widget here ...
I am by no means a search guru, but at work they have tasked me with creating custom search scopes. What they want is the ability to search a bunch of document libraries of a specific name in bunch of office sites. John Ferringer gave me this awesome link: http://blogs.microsoft.co.i... I figured that I could somehow use it to create custom scopes for the document libraries. I started playing around and ...
In my company, we agree on certain subject macros for articles, news and similar non work related messages. Each of us creates his own Outlook 2007 Rules to move those to specialized folders. The drawback of this is that new messages that get moved to other folders than Inbox do not have the desktop alert: You do not know whether you got a new message or not. This might be OK for messages flagged [fun], but as I have been in the company for long, I used to have folders for each of my complete projects ...
As the Grand Poobah of Visual Basic at Microsoft, Paul is one of the busiest guys I know. Fortunately for us, he managed to find the time to answer these NINE Questions. 1. So, inquiring minds want to know, where are you from? Originally, Durham, NC. But I’ve been in Seattle almost as long as I was in Durham so… 2. Who do you work for? Give me the 10 second pitch on them. Why would I want to buy their product? A small technology company in Redmond, WA. You probably haven’t heard of them or used their ...
A friend of mine made a blog post about the lack of conferences in Kansas City. Here is the post: http://www.codebucket.org/a... If you don't know Lee Brandt you need to know him, even if he's not necessarily a full on SharePoint Nation Inductee he's a great developer. He was one of my awesome teammates at Coders 4 Charity. I would like to call him one of my friends in Kansas City. He makes some good points. I also ended up in a conversation with Jeff ...
Starting in mid July, Microsoft will be selling Office by subscription. Including Office will be a security software program called Live One Care. The costs will be $70 a year. Even though Google has free web based programs that compete with Office, many students and teachers still prefer to use Office. This announcement is a win win and you can purchase the product at Circuit City. Technorati Tags: Office,Microsoft,Circuit City ...

I've worked with Laurel for a few months on a number of different projects and had the good fortune of finally meeting her face to face (that would be her face on the right, and yours truly on the left) during TechEd Developers 2008. She was gracious enough to indulge me in a few drinks at Howl At The Moon and to answer these NINE Questions, so here we go... 1. Where are you from? I grew up in a small town in southern Maine. I now live in Medford, Massachusetts, less than two miles from O'Reilly's ...
