This new episode is back to the usual Office humor!  Love IT!

Workflow Activities What are they? Activities are the blocks with which a workflow is build. Every activity developed for the ready-made workflows used in SharePoint, Office Designer, and those which are self-developed, are all done by Microsoft Visual Studio. There are two types of activities: Simple Activities: Their name in no way implies that these activities are easy to develop. As a matter of fact, it can lead to months of coding. Although it is not a rule, simple activities are most of the ...
I like the new ribbon features of Microsoft Office, although sometimes finding things can be a little difficult, since I've been using office and wordperfect for years and years. I recently bought PowerDirector because windows movie maker just wouldn't do what I needed to do. Upon opening the app, I see nice looking UI, complete with what appears to be a ribbon interface, at least until you click on the "Home" button, and notice that there aren't any ribbons. When you click on the "Home" button you ...

Just a reminder that the Tampa Bay IASA September meeting is tonight starting at 6:30 PM. SharePoint Architectural Perspectives While SharePoint does have the one-button install option, it isn't a monolithic application that just gets dropped on a server. SharePoint has a number of moving pieces that should be understood by both infrastructure and application architects. In this session, we'll review the architectural makeup of SharePoint's infrastructure, as well as the components of a custom SharePoint ...

Web browser support is divided into two levels: level 1 and level 2. Although administrative tasks on SharePoint sites are optimized for level 1 browsers, Office SharePoint Server 2007 also provides support for other browsers that are commonly used. Level 1 Web browsers · Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x (32-bit) · Windows Internet Explorer 7.x (32-bit) Level 2 Web browsers Level 2 Web browsers provide basic functionality, so that users can both read and write in SharePoint sites and perform site ...
I started my new job at B&R Business Solutions this week and met some pretty good people (Nas Ali, Chris Regan, and Nick Gallo). It was a lot of days of bad sleep due to some early on health issues with my boyfriend and then later on me falling asleep at odd hours. It was definitely a change of pace, but I liked it. I was actually surrounded by SharePoint People. I felt like I was not a Klingon working on Earth (for lack of a better analogy). It feels like this job will stick for a while. I also ...

I’ve gotten a lot of interest from people who want to know more about the TechMasters idea and some really great questions. To address these I’d like to schedule a couple times to meet over coffee to answer these. Because my office is in the South metro, I tend to think of places near me, so how does Bruegger’s off of France sound (Bruegger's Bagel Bakery · (952) 926-2696 · 7101 France Ave S, Minneapolis)? If I get a lot of feedback maybe we can pick someplace further north as well. We will plan ...

Productivity Tip Series from Murray Gordon, Architect Evangelist at Microsoft. Recently lots of folks have been asking me how I expose my calendar to folks on the Internet. So I thought I would give everyone a little how to. First you need to open outlook. Then go to to the calendar view Click the calendar you are trying to share In this case it's just "Calendar" Then you should click "Share My Calendar…" This is how you share your calendar with someone you work with. This is NOT how you share your ...
It's been a crazy ride over the past year and a half working at Terracon as the SharePoint Guru (that's what they started to call me because I fulfilled so many different roles). My last day was a little hectic yesterday, because I decided to stay and hang out with my friend Julie F. I like clothes shopping every so often and I heard there was this awesome JCPenney Outlet on 75th street. She had some insane ticket, so I figured if I wait until 5 p.m. everything would get straightened out. It turns ...

A while ago (while still at Microsoft), I created a diagram that provided a functional breakout of the various versions and feature of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. I presented this diagram to customers, user goups, etc. Eventually, I posted it to the internal Microsoft document library (ICE) thinking that someone may want to use it. This morning, I was reading some research from Gartner about Portals and discovered something interesting... They're using my diagram in Microsoft's 2007 SharePoint ...

So I was out at lunch (Davanni's) with my friend Kitty last week and while we were there, this lady was going "table to table" getting people to fill out slips for a drawing for a free massage. I like "FREE" a lot so I filled out the little slip and handed it back to her. Imagine my surprise when I got home that evening and received a phone call informing me that I was a lucky winner. All I had to do was make an appointment at "Above and Beyond Chiropractic." The nice lady with the accent informed ...

Recently the BT Broadband ADSL line at our shared office has been having problems. Slow speeds but more importantly regularly dropping out. We moved over to a second broadband connection but wanted to monitor the state of the original broadband connection so we could confirm the fault had been fixed. Should I code it in C#, thrash out some PowerShell scripts, pah! No, an old fashioned .cmd file and some batch commands will do ..... need to know the time, try a ping, and then wait for 10 seconds before ...
I received a support call from a client today, for which I provide a moderation system for viewer text messages for broadcast on a television channel. This is one of common questions that I get during my presentations/conferences. We see MS with OS, Office line of products, Server/middleware products, designer products, games, etc. In addition to that, MS is also competing with enterprise like Google and Oracle on multiple avenues. At high level, it looks amazing to me. Anyone would agree that having developed and delivered these kind-of stack of products is itself an achievement. And delivering world class products and competing with market leaders ...
Too Many cooks in the kitchen. When is too many developers one project a bad idea? So I had the chance to meet with some friends the other day. Of course they work as developers like me. They work for one of those companies with allot of money to throw at a web site (a == 1). I found it interesting having 20 developers writing code for a web site. They called it Agile programming or Extreme Programming (Developer Humping). The reason I called it this was as they (my friends) described agile as two ...

In a previous post I started to get in to how I was surprised by the amount of detail Chris Givens put in to creating this course. Nevertheless I am still astounded at the amount of detail and the depth he goes in to. Let me back up a bit here. I have been requested to teach Chris's Advanced SharePoint Developer course at AmeriTeach next week (9/8 – 9/12). So I spent much of last week getting deeper in to the instructor demos and the course labs. I was very impressed not only by the amount of detail ...
Normally I’d look at any new announcement from Google like a kid unwrapping a present on Christmas morning: they’re typically cool, and at worst good for 10 min of attention until I put it aside to focus on something else. But their announcement of Chrome made me want to pick up my iMac and throw it out the window. One of the biggest banes to a web developer’s existence has always been the plethora of browsers that we have to test our applications against. Keith Elder recently blogged about how CodeZone ...

MSDN Unleashed Session 1: Demystifying WPF Today’s applications need to do more than simply work. They need to draw in the user, and provide a differentiated experience. This means moving beyond battleship gray forms, boxy UIs, and providing a positive user experience. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) provides powerful capabilities to develop a compelling user interface, the kind that makes an application stand out. In this session, we’ll examine the core concepts of WPF such as layout panels, ...

My Office and SharePoint integration keeps breaking, causing my browser to crash every time I open an office document through SharePoint v2. I suspect a patch or something related to Office 2003 was recently installed on my machine. I'm posting my SharePoint/Office Integration fix here, so that I'm prepared the next time it breaks. :) [Fix] Unfortunately MSFT's out of the box resolution from the KB article didn't help (http://support.microsoft.c... However, I didn't find a resolution to ...
Mission: Pet Food MillStatus: Abandoned, at least 10 yearsDebrief:We got together shortly after dark, with no clear plan on where we wanted to go. Piling in the car, we stopped at a convenience store to grab some snacks and batteries. I have a ridiculously bright LED flashlight but it eats batteries pretty fast. After that, we took a ride and briefly (without getting out of the car) scouted a couple locations of interest. One in particular looked interesting, but was sealed up tight, with concrete ...
I am trying to start up a panel where a bunch of SharePoint experts (maybe 5 or 6) sit in front of the KC Office Geeks and answer questions members ask. They could range from SharePoint to any office development topics. I am thinking about doing this on our June 4th, 2009 meeting. If you are interested in sitting on the panel fill out the contact form on my blog and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I will probably have the people on the panel talk about there area of expertise for about 5 ...
Microsoft ArcReady Website: www.arcready.com When: September 16 from 9:00-11:30 Where: Microsoft Office in Bloomington Topic: Architecting Modern Distributed Applications Nearly every application we build today has dependencies to other systems. It is a very exciting time for me to see that book shaping up after almost a year of work on it. Yes I will be happy to see the finished, paper-printed work!! Read the rest of this entry » ...
What do you do? Many people, particularly men, have their personal identity defined by what they do for a living. At a recent church picnic, there was the usual small talk, which eventually leads to the question, "What do you do?". And, even though people mean well, they may feel better about you or themselves, or even evaluate you differently, based on your response. One of the guys was embarassed and avoided the question. Later, he said that he used to have a prominent job with a big office and ...
I have been a big fan of Launchy for some time. I find that it helps me be just a tiny bit more productive each day. It at least let's me not have to search through my start menu for the program I want to launch. However, today I found a new alternative provide by Microsoft Office Labs. This application has some real potential to replace Launchy on my laptop. I will continue to use and let everyone know what I find out. Check it out here: http://www.officelabs.com/p... ...
