Few weeks ago, I checked my Cell phone account and found out that I am eligible for phone upgrade. So, I went to AT&T web site and checked the phones and ordered a refurbished LG phone and paid the charges. Few days later on Tuesday April 14th 2009, I got the phone and tried it. It was a disaster; it was not functioning and locking out all the time. Wednesday morning I called them and said I want to return this phone. And they sent me a label by email to put on the phone box and return it. I ...

I didn't realize you could do this. If you want a math zone in Office Word, just type Alt+=. This will allow you to enter equations with simple notation. If you type a^2+ b^2=c^2 for Pythagoras algorithm, it will convert give you a nice graphical representation. While you're in the equation editor, a cool ribbon appears that allows you to edit an equation even if you aren't aware of the linear notation. If I wanted to write an equation in the past for posting, I would have to hunt down a pregenerated ...
I have been a professional computer programmer for almost 30 years. My main areas of expertise are in database applications and programming tools. Lately, I've also spent quite a lot of time in the specific field of reporting, which also includes some work on building data warehouses. My current programming language of choice is C#.Net. Although I have a full-time day job, I've been taking on part-time consulting work. I generally have about ten hours per week available, which works well for small ...

The jolly folks at Microsoft have come up with some original names for the next Office products:

Office 14 (note no 13 due to superstitions) is to be Office 2010

More strangely MOSS 14 loses the Office bit to become Microsoft SharePoint server (MSS) so wewill now have WSS 4.0 and MSS 2010!

All right so I exaggerated slightly with the title, but I literally did not see my bed for two weeks. A couple weeks ago was Passover, so I flew to Florida to visit my grandmother. Nothing exciting really, but Passover and fixing bugs. Then my grandmother, her husband, and I flew to Philadelphia to see my cousins. We had a pretty full house. I stayed for about a week and drove into the New Jersey B&R Office. I also spoke at the Philadelphia Office Geeks about Silverlight 2.0 and SharePoint. It ...
I did a poll on the 8th of April which asked the question: What language would you choose to use 12 months from today if you were given the chance to develop a brand new application and you were allowed to choose the programming language? The result was rather interesting. Over 50% of you went with C#, three times more than Visual Basic (.NET), with C++ coming in a distant 3rd. BBC Basic scored rather well. I think this recognises that for many of us we miss the interactive environments that came ...
I know, what's new Chris! We have heard this a million times before you. And, yes, you might have heard this a million times before me. But, as I go from project to project there is one thing that remains constant for a successful project and that is good communication. When communication fails the project fails when its flows easily then projects are successful. That's one of the reasons why I am a fan of true Agile/Scrum types of development efforts over things like Rational and waterfall. Don't ...
In a bold move, Microsoft decided to rename SharePoint one more time to SharePoint 2010 for the next version. Check out these two articles on the change, but it looks like the detachment from Office does not mean it will be less feature rich with the integration with Office, much like portals weren’t removed when it went from SPS to MOSS. I am excited to see the name change, but we really need a new acronym as trendy as MOSS was. MSP, SPX, not sure. No name has been released for WSS, but my bet is ...

Florida has a very active developer community. The biggest problem we seem to have is that all of these different groups usually don't know about each and there hasn't been a "centralized clearinghouse" listing all of the technical communities. Joe Healy, one of our Florida Microsoft Developer Evangelists, maintains a list and one-page flyers for each of the main areas in Florida. I think the eventual plan is that Joe will be updating his site to take advantage of the newer version of Live Maps and ...
Laptops are the client machine of choice in the Enterprise. They are an essential component of modern business allowing the workforce to turn almost anywhere into an office and place of business. In the Enterprise the laptop will steadily taken over the place of many desktops in business, there will be a place for them in static workforces but for everyone else it will be the default device. Because laptops play such an important role in the Enterprise, no Enterprise Technology blog would be any ...
PowerShell users are scripters and developers who love productivity tools. That’s why you and I like PowerShell – it gives us so much to help us work more efficiently. RSSBus is another swiss-army knife of technology along this same vein, and is a handy complement to PowerShell. The biggest wins? #1, RSSBus makes it easy to get data. No matter the source of the data (tons of sources are supported already, with many more to come and an open interface so anybody can build more data connectors), with ...

Wow! If you have any sense of humor you have to see what Google has come up with now! As many of you know, you can set your Microsoft Outlook to have an automatic out of office reply. I will detail some tips on how to do that in a second. However, how great would it be to have an automatic, politician like, non-committal spin generator for when you are out of the office, instead? Leave it to the Geniuses at Google to add this feature to Gmail! Talk about an office productivity booster, instead of ...

Programming Office Business Applications (OBA) with VSTO is an extreme -you are don’t ever know, which COM wrappers are realized and work good, and which are not. There’s a woot-off going on today (http://www.woot.com) So, I’m feeling the need to be clever in my post and maybe do it as lyrics to a song? Can I be that annoying? I just got myself a brand new MacBook Pro. The whole point is getting out of my comfort zone and start learning to use a new OS.

For those of you who are .net devs on a Mac, could you give me a few tips & pointers to make this experience as painless as possible. What do I use to run windows? Bootcamp, parallels, fusion? Do I need quicksilver? Do I run office on the Mac or in the VM?

Any help would be appreciated.

http://officesharepointpro.... As readers of this newsletter know, I've been referring to Office 14 as Office 2010 just as a "wild guess," but it appears that the name might stick. Last week, during his annual “Strategic Update” briefing with Wall Street analysts, Steve Ballmer disclosed that Office 14 won’t be shipping in 2009. "The next big innovation milestone is Office 14, our next Office release," Ballmer said, "Which will ...

Wow… it’s at Day 3 that I usually start to fade fast, and this one’s no exception. Yesterday was awesome… It began with a Silverlight breakfast meetup with an ever expanding contracting group of folks to name a few: Tim Heuer, Laruent Bugnion (thanks for signing my book and the kind words!), John Papa (again thanks for signing my book and the kind words!), Matthias Shapiro, Bryant Likes (finally met you), Pete Brown, Frank LaVigne, Walt Ritscher, and wow, memory loss on the rest of the people. I quite like the new ribbon interface in Office 2007, but occasionally I still find myself sometimes hunting for commands that I know exist somewhere..... If you are the same, then you will be pleased to know that there is a really good solution to this situation in the form of the Search Commands plugin from the OfficeLabs team at Microsoft. It adds a tab to the ribbon that lets you search all the commands in any of the office applications. If for instance you could not find the Spell Check facility ...
When Barack Obama took office on January 20, he issued a memorandum on Transparency and Open Government. Government should be transparent. Welcome back to the further adventures with NAFTA. Last episode, we had a face to face encounter with the Customs and Border Patrol. Part of that interaction was getting a phone number that I could call to gather more information. This is where our story continues… I called the number given, which announced that I was calling the CBP office at the airport. I went through the automated menu, waiting for the part where I could ask questions about visas. I waited…and waited…and waited, listening through ...

I should be sitting in the Denver airport right now waiting for my connecting flight to Tucson, but I’m not. Instead I’m here in Winnipeg trying to make sense of my experience with the U.S. CBP (Customs and Border Protection) representatives. So first, some background: For those of you that don’t know what it is, NAFTA stands for the North American Free Trade Act. This act was intended to help make trade between Canada, the US, and Mexico easier and its been in existence since 1994. Part of NAFTA ...

If there is ever a time to be aware of how powerful your words are, it's now. Jonathan was sitting in his grey fabricated cube, wishing he were anywhere else. It was 9:43 PM on a Tuesday night, and his monitor was spraying that harsh, bluish off-white glow, just as it had been for the past 14 hours. Jonathan was in a foul mood, but it wasn't the long hours that bothered him, as he was accustomed to late nights at the office. He was well-paid, after all, and was grateful for his job. He enjoyed conversations ...
