My Website Got Hijacked! Now What?

If you are a publisher of a website and find that your content has been duplicated word-for-word, or worse, your entire website has been downloaded and then uploaded to a different server ,  here are some steps you can take to resolve it.

1.  Enter the name of the url address that has ripped-off your content in in order to get as much information as possible about the publisher of the site and the host provider.

2.  Once you have the information supplied via Who Is, write an email to the adminstrator of that site and to the web hosting company of the copycat site explaining your situation.

3.  Your site will be somewhat damaged by the other site(s) containing your content because the presence of those sites siphon traffic away from your site--and often lower your ranking. It is also possible that both your site and the duplicate site(s) will get tagged as spam sites, further damaging your ranking. Fortunately, the search engines are getting much better at identifying source sites from copycat sites. To help you modify your site to defend against content theft, follow the advice offered by Google @ this URL:

4. If you find that the host site and/or the publisher of the duplicate site are unavailable or distinterested in your complaint, you can pursue the issue further with a cease and desist letter prepared by your attorney, or you can file a DCMA case with a private service organization such as DCMA, URL:

Since you found your content duplicated on at least one other site, it would be a good idea to see if anyone else has copied your content. To do this, pay a visit to Copy Scape, URL:

As an aside, you may need to retrieve old versions of your website or of the copycat publisher's website. To do that, visit the Way Back Machine available through the Web Archive Project:

Hopefully, following these steps will get your content back without too much hassle!!
